Gross was born in Graz, Austria in 1877 and went on to study law at the University of Vienna. After his studies, he developed an interest in psychoanalysis and studied under Sigmund Freud. By 1908, he had become a practicing psychoanalyst focusing on topics such as dream analysis, sexuality, and the unconscious mind.
Gross’s anarchist beliefs were reflected in his work; he was a proponent of free love and encouraged couples to have open relationships or engage in extramarital affairs, believing that this could lead to a more fulfilling sexual life. He also believed that repression of sexual desires could lead to psychological problems and that this repression itself was responsible for many of society’s ills.
Gross eventually became addicted to drugs, alcohol, and morphine, leading to his death in 1920 at the age of 43. Despite his untimely death, Gross left behind a powerful legacy that continues to influence modern psychology today.
