Katherine Johnson
Katherine Johnson was born in 1918 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. She was a gifted mathematician who loved numbers and excelled in school.
At the age of 14, she graduated from high school and went on to college, becoming one of the first African-American women to attend an integrated university.
Katherine’s talent for mathematics enabled her to work for NASA as a computer in the 1950s. She wrote programs that calculated flight trajectories for the space program.
Her calculations were so accurate that John Glenn asked her to double-check the numbers given to him by the electronic computers. This was the first time a woman was asked to verify the calculations for a space mission.

Katherine continued to break boundaries throughout her career at NASA. In 1960, she co-authored a paper on orbiting satellites, which was published by the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets.
She also worked on the Apollo 11 mission, helping to ensure its success.

Hedy Lamarr
Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress and inventor. She was born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler on November 9, 1914, in Vienna, Austria.
She began her career in the 1930s as an actress in Austrian and German films. In 1933, she starred in the controversial Czech film Ecstasy, which featured a nude swimming scene.
In 1938, Lamarr married Fritz Mandl, an Austrian munitions manufacturer. She was unhappy with the marriage and escaped to Paris with her mother. While there, she met Louis B. Mayer of MGM Studios who offered her a contract in Hollywood.
Lamarr moved to the United States and became one of Hollywood’s most popular stars during the 1940s. At the same time, she began working on a secret invention for the US Navy to help them in World War II.

Lamarr was granted a patent for her “frequency-hopping” invention which allowed radio signals to be sent without detection by enemy forces. Her invention is now used in modern cell phone technology as well as Wi-Fi networks and GPS systems.
In 1997, Lamarr was honored with a Technical Grammy Award for her contribution to the world of technology.
Her life story inspired two films, including a documentary called Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story which premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival. Lamarr died at the age of 85 in 2000 at her home in Florida.
