Ingredients
- 4 medium sweet potatoes (about 2 pounds/908 grams)
- 1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, melted
- 1/3 cup (79 grams) whole milk
- 1/4 cup (50 grams) brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon (4 grams) pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 grams) salt
- 2 large eggs (68 grams)
- 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (65 grams) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup (110 grams) chopped pecans
Method
- Let’s start with preheating your oven to 325°F (165°C).
- Take the sweet potatoes, peel them, cut into chunks, and boil in a large pot until tender. It should take around 20 minutes. Once done, drain and set them aside.
- Take a large bowl, add the melted butter, milk, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Now, add the sweet potatoes into the bowl. Use a potato masher to mash the potatoes and mix them well with the other ingredients.
- Beat the eggs and add them to the bowl, stir them into the sweet potato mixture until they blend in well.
- Let’s get the baking dish, transfer the mix into a 9×13 inch dish, make sure it’s spread evenly.
- Now take a separate bowl, and mix the granulated sugar, flour, melted butter, and chopped pecans together. Sprinkle this mixture over the sweet potato mixture lying in the baking dish.
- Time to bake! Put the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the top turns golden brown and bubbly. Let it cool down for a few minutes before serving.
There you have it! A delicious, simple, and budget-friendly sweet potato casserole. Enjoy this golden, sweet, and crunchy delight. Bon appétit!
A lighter take on sweet potato casserole
Want a healthier variant of our beloved sweet potato casserole?
Here’s how you do it: Replace regular butter with almond or olive oil and use low-fat milk instead of full-cream versions.
For sweetness, opt for natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup rather than refined sugar. You could also make a more fibrous topping by combining oats, chopped nuts, and whole wheat flour.
Storing your sweet potato casserole
Once your sweet potato casserole is made, it’ll remain fresh for about 3-4 days in the refrigerator. Be sure to store it in an airtight container to preserve its taste and freshness.
If you’re looking to freeze your casserole, do so without the topping—just prepare, add and bake the topping when you’re ready to eat it. Thaw overnight in the fridge and bake at the usual temperature.
Pairings for sweet potato casserole
Sweet potato casserole is a standout dish on its own, but it pairs well with a variety of mains.
Try serving it as a side with roasted turkey or grilled chicken for a winter twist or with BBQ pork for a summer feast. A slice of crusty bread can also accompany the casserole well.
To drink, a semi-dry Riesling or a light-bodied Pinot Noir complement the sweet and spiced flavors of the dish.
Speedy sweet potato casserole
If you’re short on time, you can take some shortcuts but still prepare a delicious sweet potato casserole. To save time, you can buy pre-cubed sweet potatoes or cook them in the microwave before preparing the casserole.
For the topping, use granola or pre-made streusel toppings instead of making one from scratch.
Leftover sweet potato casserole ideas

You can make breakfast treats by using the leftover casserole to fill crepes or stuffing it in pancakes. Or transform them into lunch by making sweet potato quesadillas or throwing chunks into a salad. The possibilities are endless!
