About the Artist

Victor Hugo Zayas

Victor Hugo Zayas extensively studied the works of Titian, Velazquez, Rembrandt and Goya, yet his paintings are more expressionistic and at first glance appear to have more in common with the later work of J.M.W. Turner with his deft handling of light than artists of the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries. Large, bold brushstrokes dominant Zayas' surfaces which are thickly covered with many layers of oil paint, at times projecting more than an inch off the canvas. Zayas grew up in Mazatlan before moving to Los Angeles where he has been making his mark on the art scene for more than 30 years, including a solo exhibition at the Laguna Art Museum in Spring 2012. His work is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Centro Cultural de Arte Contemporaneo (Mexico City) and numerous other museums in Mexico.
