Imagine living for an entire month without your smartphone. This has been my experience, and what I have discovered has changed the way I perceive the world and myself. In this article, I will explore various aspects of this challenge and its psychological implications.
The decision to log off
The decision to abandon my smartphone for 30 days wasn’t an easy one. We live in an era where the technology it is an integral part of our daily life. However, I was curious to see what would happen if I reduced my use of digital devices.
The impact on my brain
Without the constant bombardment of notificationsmy brain started working differently. Studies such as the one conducted by Erik Peper and Richard Harvey at the University of San Francisco demonstrate that excessive smartphone use can alter our cognitive processes.
My mind slowly adapted to a more natural rhythm, improving my ability to focus and creativity.
The rediscovery of time
Without a smartphone on hand, I found I had more free time. I started reading more, practicing hobbies I had neglected and taking long walks outdoors.
This has allowed me to connect with myself and the people around me in ways I never imagined possible.
Paradoxically, without a smartphone, my social life has improved. I started to establish deeper connections with people, because I was completely present in the conversations.
This has allowed me to develop greater empathy and understanding towards others.
This challenge taught me that disconnection from digital can lead to greater mental well-being. Although I have no intention of abandoning my smartphone completely, I have learned to use it more consciously.
If you’ve ever thought about taking a break from your device, I encourage you to give it a try.
